Description
Desmonema brooch was created in 2020 with the collection Terra Incognita – Solar.
Terra Incognita – Solar collection of 9 spherical, round cabochon formed brooches made of recycled wood and titanium with additional stones. The form and the shape of the pieces remind of a Coronaviridae, spherical particles reminiscent an image of the solar corona. A shape, found everywhere in nature, locked in our subconscious. Twisted and organic shapes are inspired by marine life forms like medusae and anemones. The opulence of color combinations, stories and myths, paired with material characteristic of titanium and wood, result in fantasy creations which approach real sea animals in different ways. Contrast and contradiction becomes sharper by using divergent materials side by side. For me it is important to feel the material, its smooth or rough surface, its natural softness or its temperature. I try to involve as many senses as possible to create a vivid and strong jewellery piece. I’ve abstracted the body into a construction and deconstruction of materials, and gave it a new form powered by colours.
In the Desmonema brooch is a contrast between material – wood, stone, titanium and colour – yellow amber, rose and blue-green.
Jewellery as artistic medium celebrates passionate love for all human assets and its freedom of expression our own individuality. Jewellery as a talisman or a symbol of hope and faith is a reminder of cherished beliefs. Jewellery that grows and develops in hard times is emotional, but strong. We put our hopes and expectations in a better future. Hope is action, not useless waiting. Fighting climate crisis, thinking for healthcare, love and justice and don’t lose the painful hope of our freedom and lives.
I’ve made this brooches when Covid-19 has begun to spread in China. The shape reminds of spherical particles, reminiscent an image of the solar corona. This is a shape, found everywhere in nature and therefore locked in our subconscious. The circle, or ring, represents the symbol of eternity and never-ending existence. It also symbolizes Heaven because of its perfect symmetry and its unvarying balance. As an emblem for God, it suggests not only the perfection of God but the everlasting God.
